Final Reflection

Looking back, my goal was to be really good at having conversations with professionals.  The 10 weeks of my internship is over.  Arts & Letters was the place where I accomplished my goal.  I met many interesting people, most of teachers and artistic folks. They taught me many things during this short period of time.  I talked to people constantly and improved my communication skills as a result.  In addition, I learned how to be detail orientated.  I focused every time on my tasks when it was necessary to be careful and to pay close attention.
An important quality I began to appreciate in people while interning at Arts & Letters is the quality of being flexible.  Why? I had a problem with my schedule because I was part of two other programs, one in Manhattan called The Door and the other in Brooklyn on the LEC Volleyball team. When I asked to change my schedule my supervisor gave me a chance to change it.  I had many times when I was too busy to intern and she allowed me to miss a day. Almost every week I had a new schedule but my supervisor never complained. She is good person.  All these schedule changes forced me to improve my communication skills and get better at managing my time.
I worked with other people besides my supervisor who needed help. It was pleasure to see them happy after I finished tasks for them. They were very thankful. Both my supervisor and her coworkers accomplished many more things because I was their helper.
Ten weeks went so quickly. As end date was coming closer, I started to highlight my internship duties.  My decoration of the office of Arts & Letters was so beautiful. The excitement of my supervisor gave me more energy each time she commented on my artistic talents designing the walls with such limited resources.
A few thoughts about my internship now that I’m all done: It’s good to have busy days and have lots to do. Workplace is not school, but it’s a place where you need to stay focused and attentive to everything you are doing. I would say work requires more responsibility though.  I want to pursue a career in medical field. I will stay focused on my career to become a doctor one day. In the mean time, I will serve people and make them happy. In order to get that degree and be a doctor, I need to go to college. I’m still interested in college and the programs I want to take in my freshman year. When I go to college, I want to study premed.  I will also try to intern at a hospital to gain knowledge.
One of the most important things I learned as an intern is that building relationships with people is extremely useful. Connections mean we have more opportunities.
If I started new internship next week, two things I would do are be more careful about finding an internship that is closer to my house and try to find an internship with a flexible schedule. These two things are very important. As I said before, I experienced long commute to my internship but fortunately had a flexible schedule that worked well.
If you want to be a good intern next year, you need to possess the following four qualities: Be focused, flexible, responsible, and communicative. Make sure you talk to supervisor if you not satisfied with tasks. Speak for self and work from heart. Always respect people around you, treat them equally and be thankful.
I will miss my ambitious supervisor and tasks I did, every day after lunch include trip to work, hour on the train and people, who were around me.

Post # 7 Thank you Letter

05/18/2012

Dear Ms. Joseph,

From all my respect, I thank you for being such as good mentor during my 10 week internship. I spent this period of time with you and learned a lot. I really enjoyed working with you. You helped me to gain knowledge about how to conduct research and how to create short summaries for students. In addition, I learned about important office skills such as using a paper cutter and copy machine. I can go back to my high school and help my schoolteachers with these tasks now.  I won’t have any troubles when they do. You are great person with positive energy. I really like your organize work style and flexibility with co-workers. I noticed that you never reject students’ ideas. Even when they came to your office in bad mood, you explained them that bad behavior is not good for students. The way how express their feel was good, by drawing pictures. You are really helpful not for me but for entire Art & Letters crew. I appreciated how you helped me with the tasks I didn’t understand and clarified things for me quickly.

Thank you for recognizing my ability to be detail-orientated and helping me to further develop that skill. You are the first person to tell me that. By organizing the necessary supplies for students, I built my organizational skills working with journals and getting them ready for the young students.

Thank you for being an inspiration to me.  Your warm words of encouragement really helped. I think you have guided me in the right way for professional presentations to companies to that can donate to your school’s budget. The instructions you gave me about making presentation folders taught me a lot about how organizations can raise money.  In addition, by meeting new teachers and talking to them I gained stronger communication skills.

I’m proud to have been your intern and I wish you best of luck in the future.  My internship teacher is looking forward to keeping contact with you and collaborating for next year to bring on more interns.  I will miss you. Take care my great mentor.

Sincerely,
Shahzod Saydaliev

Supervisor: Meghan & Intern: Shahzod
This is eighth week of internship program. New assignment to interpret pictures from the site. My next post is about pictures from middle school. The Urban Assembly Academy of Arts & Letters is place, where i'm interning and time is going so quick. These pictures from the places, where I work and some of them the tasks I have done there. I'm glad that I spend my time after school there. I learned something and I never regret my decision that I chose to go there. I'm happy, as supervisor excited that I was their intern for that time.

This picture above is my little office. I know it looks messy but it is not how usually look. It is not that fancy office, At least I like to work here because there is quietly and calmly. I have done research of summer camp in one week. My computer, which is not on the picture. I like to use the camera that helps me to enter the kids’ works into the system. In 21th century most things are modernized. Online availability of students work is one of great invitations and useful site of technology. Overall, the circle table with some paper on the tap is in the right side of the room.

Move on to this piece of art designed by the intern from IHSL. This is one the my latest work I have done in seventh week of the internship. I enjoy of doing that and creating some artistic work. They are love what I get done and I love too. Isn't it beautiful? I work based on my creativity and feelings. Sometime I have new ideas I want to express by art work but i have no interest in Art. I prefer to do math and chemistry. However by building up the board and making something beautiful I burn something in Art.

Most of my design works depend on this machine captured by me. Those machines are the letter cutter machine. The location is in the first floor in teachers’ room. My supervisor taught me how to use. I like to use when I’m working with building board. It’s easy and don’t required specific knowledge. Pay attention what you are doing and be careful with fingers, which is simple rule. This experience contributes me to make my creation good. Furthermore, I have some problems with ordering. I follow the note left by teachers. But people using but they not put them back. I reorganizing them and show intelligent at workplace.

This picture above present copy machine at my little office. I have 3 of giant machine such school is big. Most people are familiar and I'm not surprised. Our days are not passing without copying anything. This machine is one thing that I don't like to do. Most when i'm trying to make copy, there are no paper or technical issues. It's ridiculous when you want to get off from as soon as possible. The good thing i'm not that much using it. When i'm using I just wan to give this task to some else but there are no one to do except me. I consider this my negative thing at my site.

Public transportation is good when everything on time. This is the picture of the R train, as you see. I hate when trains are delayed because of traffic or construction work. It's frustrating, how long can be these construction works. The terrible thing I need wait 15-20 mins just for one stop. I don't like to walk especially after the lunch. It hurts my stomach. Anyways, I passed quick eight weeks of internship by staying longer at station than supposed to be. Even, sometimes I was being late for internship. This what, we called life is not straight but life is with challenges and fun things on it.

In conclusion, I enjoyed of spending my internship time at Urban Academy of Arts & Letters. It was fun sometimes with a lot of to do, sometimes just for looking tasks. Which was fine, it happened everywhere. I learnt some new things and noticed that people like my very detail orientated skill on the tasks I did. I was happy to hear this.

I'm closing my assignment with final sentence. Thank you for my supervisor and adviser, who worked out with me and gave me chance to do more than one programs at same time. One person told me flexible is good quality for person. They have that one.
